I think from your picture that the tree is indeed a mahogany tree which is a semi deciduous tree that loses its leaves once a year. When it does, there is a small bud/flower underneath and like Phil said, it quickly grows new leaves. Google mahogany leaf using the Google Image engine and you will get several examples to compare to know for sure.
