Cafe by the Ruins

Cafe by the Ruins is one of the more popular spots in Baguio City for winding down after the day's tour of the city. Here you can relax and sip salabat (ginger tea) or coffee. The place has a soothing ambience, which is a surprise considering that it's still close to the business district. It's actually located very near the City Hall.

When we have guests from the "lowlands", we bring them to this place for good food and for catching up.
I had champorado with tinapa (chocolatey rice porridge with shredded smoked fish). The pot has salabat (ginger tea) in it. My companions, unfortunately, do not like it inspite of its reputation in improving your singing voice. And what about my voice? Ummm....

Follen had shredded beef ...while my wife ordered chicken with fries (which Jo-Lo loves).
There was one time when we went here one afternoon and it rained real hard. No worries. We ordered hot beverages and hot soup and spent the afternoon chatting. It was really nice and relaxing.

  1. I've eaten here before and it was great. It'd be nice if they had more selections on the menu though.

  2. Wil: For us, their current menu is just ok. For the many visits we've done, we have only tried very few of the menu entrees. They have a "menu of the day" though.

I remember Cafe by the Ruins, cool place...Diba this is also the hang out place of some Pinoy artists? I haven't been to Baguio for quite some time. Would be nice to visit again.

  9. i like champorado with tuyo. I don't like salabat. Maganda na ang boses ko.

Eh Watson, suggestment, adjust brightness of the photo or the contrast in your photoshop or whatever software you are using.

    Pics are beautiful though.

  20. Rach: Yes it is indeed. Hindi maingay inspite of the fact that it's near the busy city hall.

Sari-Sari: Yes that was the reputation of Ruins... but now you'd rarely see writers or artists they. Their favorite watering hole now is either Tam-Awan Village or at OMG.

Cathy: Thanks for the suggestions and the compliment! Ayaw mo rin ng salabat like my wife? It's a nice drink I think. Kakaiba.

Lino: Malapit lang sya! Include it in your list of places to go next time.

Sidney: I love your eggs photo documentary!

  21. Leah: Nice place to unwind.

Abaniko: Hmmm... kaya siguro ayaw rin pumunta ng misis ko kapag walang bisita hehehe.

Arianna: How is you! That was quite a long time na ah! Yeah hope to see you soon too!

JMom: may next time pa naman...

Cruise: I'm sure your camera will do more justice to the place than I did.

  22. Lady Cess: Yes, I have read also in resto reviews before that this was a place for artists. Ngayon, kami na lang tumatambay. hehehe

Iskoo: Have you tried the pinikpikan? They have it here. With brown mountain rice.

U can't see 'em all in Baguio. Born and raised here, yet never been to Botanical Garden (Imelda Park na pala!). Sa mga "tourists", if a certain "kainan" is expensive, there's reason why...so just pay the price, good for Baguio's economy. I go to the "cafe" every now and then coz of the atmosphere.
    Cheers!!

  26. Dessa girl: sureleh! when you go back to Baguio

Cyberpunk: This is one of the more popular places in Baguio... there's always time to go back naman! :-)
    Thanks for dropping by!

TruBlue: Hey thanks for visiting my blog. I know you from Wil's blog. I kinda read up on your exchanges in one of his posts, and the family name "Billig" was mentioned there. We actually had a close friend with that last name. She was a working student at SLU and lived in Benguet... Buguias I think. She's now in Quezon City as a teacher. Haven't seen her in ages.

Oh yeah, I remember! Was questioning Wil's inability to speak the Ilocano dialect or his mother side's dialect. For me, it just came natural, my late dad talked to me in Ilocano and english
consistently, my late mom, her kankanaey dialect and Ilocano. Childhood friends are mixed, tagalogs, pangasinans, all CAR people. So I was never lost...
Thanx for being welcomed in your site and will try to throw in my cents every now and then..cheers.

Ruins is one of my most favorite places in Baguio, and whenever I'm there I just HAVE to visit, even if it's just to eat some camote bread or wolf down their Baguio bounty salad. I think their menu has a good selection--and maybe it's good that way because whatever you order will pretty much make your taste buds happy :)
